I have never been able to get Ubuntu to work correctly if at all. It always
had some sort of hardware issues on any PC that I tried to install it on. I
threw the disks away.

Seconded. Although my passion has wavered on this issue. None of the quick
options (gnome3, kde, xfce) felt great, and I didn't have the time to
reinstall debian (which I had used for many many years before caving into
ubuntu), and after a while I found some settings that make it usable.

So now, I just hate unity. Not passionately, just in a
my-life-would-have-been-better-if-unity-never-was sort of way. It's all
about setting the shortcut keys to something sane and getting sloppy focus
to sort of working -ish. Then it's moderately tolerable.
