Not everything needs to get kicked off at startup. Some things are perfectly capable of being kicked of on an as-needed basis, and launchd is good for that. From a systems perspective, it's when something like systemd comes along, and tries to usurp the role init is perfectly capable of playing.....thats where I'd draw the line. If you're going to go there, you might as well have a special handler/editor for every individual program on the system.
