I've got two laptops w/ SSD, and IMHO, for a user system, once you go
there, you won't go back. I'm saving up for SSD's in my desktops too.
15 second boot, 2 second shutdown, openoffice opens in under a
second. Need I say more? No waiting. This is how computers are
supposed to work.

2 caveats:

1) You need a 'newer' kernel (i.e. FreeBSD9 or Ubuntu 10.10), and you
need to change the mount options in fstab to include "discard" or
supposedly writes will slow down cumulatively due to neglecting the
'trim' sata command (google it).

2) Recent gparted will allow a 1MB alignment for new partitions, which
is aligned with the sector size / erase block size on all SSD's I've
heard about, for maximum performance.
