As a kid, when the town first started recycling (paper & glass),
you had to bring your recyclables to The Recycling Center.
This was a paved lot with a semi-trailer parked along one
edge (volunteers would bale the newspaper and stack it in
this truck which would eventually be driven off to ??? ).

The other edge of the lot was occupied by a 15' tall wall
of large cement blocks (2'x2'x4') that one of the local
quaries used to make (predates those concrete sculpted
barricades that you often see on highways to separate
lanes of traffic in construction areas).

Along this wall were three "compartments" the walls of which
were built of the same cement blocks. Each compartment was
roughly the size of a one-car garage (sans roof). Each bore
a label: "Green", "White" and "Brown".

In each compartment were recycled glass bottles of the indicated
colors.

Going to The Recycling Center was a *treat* because you could
methodically dig through your bag of bottles to be recycled
and *throw* them (*hard*!) one at a time into the respective
compartment. It was a delightful way of "venting"!

Nowadays, of course, someone would prevent you from engaging
in such (reckless) fun -- no doubt for liability reasons. :<
