The big nasty is the video card.

NVidia is right now the most trouble-free, relatively speaking.  But
long-term the ATIs have promise because ATI is releasing more info to
the FOSS developer community.  Their own drivers are kinda screwed up
a little right now, not TOO bad though.

Upshot: I would still go ATI, something late-model but not too high
end or expensive, that way if ATI goes belly up (not impossible) or if
the FOSS driver project doesn't pan out you can swap to NVidia if you
have to.  You do want something current enough that ATI's newest Linux
"binary blob" driver supports it; the newest has canceled support for
some of their own older chipsets.
