mplayer is pretty handy. And there are several GUI front-ends for
it.

As far as playlists/tagging/etc, I use other tools such as: APIs for
home-rolled stuff, and CLI tools, such as id3v2. I've also been using
a software package called Picard, from Musicbrainz, for database
lookup, and bulk tagging operations. It's written in Python, and uses
a pretty slick method of integrating their database and the local
client software via dynamically generated html on the client-side.

As far as the rant about music-playing software and Linux... that's
sort of silly, since portable software is not necessarily limited to
any particular OS. But Bowie is a clown, so not I am not entirely
surprised that he would use the opportunity to smear Linux. I think
Jordan should mail Bowie some more porn. ;-)

On a slightly different subject, I just picked up a Silicon Dust
hdomerun. I really like it! Comes with source code for both CLI and
GUI tools for controlling the unit in Linux. I really dig the
multiple programs that KUAT is broadcasting now. Using VLC for the
time being. If anyone has gotten mplayer to play UDP/RTP streams,
please let me know.
