1. There is a version of Oracle 10.2 that installed as an rpm on my
Centos 5 box. Very clean. Oracle XE is free to use up to 1 CPU, 1G RAM
and 1G database. The box can have more but Oracle will not use more.

2. Zend Core (PHP 5) is free and freely supported by Oracle and has lots
of very practical documentation. We use it for dashboards against our
vendor supported Oracle ERP app.

3. Oracle Application Express (OAE or APEX) is a web gui for creating
web-driven oracle. You can get it free from Oracle or create an account
and play with it on an Oracle sandbox.

4. Enterprise DB has created a version of Postgres that purports to be
Oracle. There are free versions also. I played with it but did not do
much with it.

In my experience, Oracle is Oracle. If you are looking for career
movement, Oracle knowledge is very helpful. The others work fine for
most non-enterprise uses and for understanding databases.
