Try changing one of the other items, such as "free software" for 
"ubuntu" and you will see an increase over time.

I think as more people use Ubuntu they are more likely to search for 
problems that relate to their distro rather than general linux problems.

Interestingly the handful of other distros that I tried show a decline 
over time. Same for Gnome and KDE.

Perhaps as linux users tend to be more technical in their background 
they are more aware of specific sites for the distros they are 
interested in - for example www.ubuntuforums.org? These visits won't be 
recorded in Google trends, right? So maybe the Google trends info has to 
be carefully interpreted...
