Hm.  In the past six months I've bought two Buffalo 1T USB drives from Fry's for about $80 apiece.

It never occurred to me that they might already be formatted!

I plugged each one in, typed "mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sd[whatever]" and haven't had a problem with either.
