[Tfug] Barebones Linux Laptop

I want to build a barebones Debian/Ubuntu compatible notebook/laptop for  
under $700 for my girlfriend. with at least 100GB HD, 1GB Ram, CD/DVD,  
10-14" screen; can anyone point to links or share any ideas?

I was looking at ASUS -liked what I saw, but wasn't certain wrt hardware  
compatibility, I thought IBM and HP would be more likely to be  
compatibile, but more pricey.  Thanks!
