[Tfug] "No modules loaded"

I'm perplexed by the the fact that the driver for my wi-fi card
(ipw2200) doesn't seem to be loading.

1: syslogd 1.4.1#21ubuntu3: restart.
2:  Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.22-14-generic
3:  Loaded 25445 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.6.22-14-generic.
4: Symbols match kernel version 2.6.22.
5: No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled.

Q: Could it be looking for 2.6.22 rather than 2.6.22-14-generic? I
really don't think so, but I'm stumped.

ISTR having similar problems occasionally in the past, but it's been
quite some time. AFAICR I solved it with symlinks as below.

System is Ubuntu 7.10 at this point. I'm planning to update to 8.04
shortly, but would like to get this ironed out first.

Kernel is:

uname -a
Linux jkT42p 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686

Googling doesn't bring up much other needing symlinks in the root dir,
which I have:

vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic
initrd.img -> /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
System.map -> boot/System.map-2.6.22-14-generic

Thanks,
