This is very interesting,

               I've integrated a number of video chips under Gentoo. 
Generally
speaking, an older chip is more likely to have kernel drivers. Newer ones
need a driver from the vendor.
               I went thru all kinds of gyrations integrating a Nvidia 
Geforce2
card. Conclusion: 1)The driver from the vendor works. (Disable the
kernel drivers) 2) Pay attention to the video memory available. If
you get a lousy colormap (8 bit). Its because you've made the "screen"
section mode dimension  too high.  1280x1024  is typically the highest.
24-bit depth is desirable.
