that command was: sudo adduser username
but I think that is probably not your issue at this point..

In the process, I stopped several of the KDE PID's but was never able to get gnome to run. My previous gnome login gui did not present options for choosing desktops. Since upgrading to Ibex the login window has the option to choose gnome, safe modes etc. The process still stalls after loggine in. Hope this helps in helping me get my head around the issue.
