IMHO biodiesel is a better option when you consider the cost of producing 
alcohol, both in terms of dollars and in lost energy distilling the stuff.  
Brasil burns the waste from sugar cane to make its alcohol from the sugar, so 
it loses nothing except the byproducts of burning.  Our alcohol is produced by 
burning petroleum, and depending on who you believe it's either a wash AFA 
energy and pollution or worse.
