Touche! ;-)

OK, I will describe a simple test involving four email messages.

1) send first email addressed to self

2) send second email with same subject and message --> does not get
threaded with first email

3) reply to first email --> gets threaded with first email

4) reply to first email, but change subject --> does not get threaded
with first email

The conclusion I draw from (2) is that Gmail is not threading strictly
based on Subject.

The conclusion of (3) is that Gmail must be using other header info,
presumably Message-Id, to thread.

The conclusion of (4) is that Gmail must also be using Subject in
addition to other header info.

I've posted a query to the Gmail group. Maybe they'll explain the
inner workings of Gmail threading. ;-)
