I always prefer DVI.  That way it's digital from the video card to the
monitor.  With the old VGA cable, your video card has to first convert
the signal to analog, send it to the monitor, then the monitor basically
converts it back to digital to light up the right pixels.  This, as with
audio, has a change to introduce noise.  If the card and the monitor
have good DACs, then you might not notice anything.  But if you have
both, might as well take analog out of the picture and go all DVI.  A
lot of video cards these days don't even have analog VGA connectors anymore.
