[Tfug] Where to start

Welcome to Linux!

We can help you with your hardware problems, but we need to know your
hardware stats.
You can get Ubuntu to cough them up by opening a terminal and running
"lspci -vv". Translation: "list everything on the PCI bus, and be
very verbose about it." After running the command, paste the output
into an e-mail header, and we can help you get the drivers you need.

For your scanner, you'll need xsane. You can get that with the
package manager. A package manager is sort of like "Add/Remove
Programs," but with steroids and with extra mustard. All software
installation happens through the package manager. With Ubuntu, this
is either Adept or Synaptic (both are GUIs for the command-line
package manager APT [Advanced Packaging Tool]). Both are under
Applications->System, IIRC. If given a choice, use Synaptic.

Once you open it, search for "xsane" (which is the software package
that has everything you need to run your scanner if it's supported).
Check the box next to it once you find it. It will attempt to install
some additional package dependencies (which is fine--with Linux,
libraries, data, and executables are usually all in separate
packages). Click OK, and click Apply. Then, all the scanning
software will be automatically downloaded, configured, and installed.
That should get your scanner working.

WiFi is not as easy; it will depend heavily on the chipset (which we
will learn from the lspci -vv command).

Regards,
Jude Nelson
