>>Stupid question. If dd-wrt is too complex, why not install
factory firmware?<<

Because factory firmware can't do anybody more advanced.

In other words, factory firmware takes an incoming Ethernet signal
(off a cable/DSL modem or similar) and feeds it out to WiFi and four
Ethernet ports. There's a few options but that's basically it.

DD-WRT and most of the other FOSS firmware sets can do WAY, way more
than that...including acting as a WiFi client. You can pay up to $100
on a dedicated Wifi-to-Ethernet adapter that won't have 1/4 the
potential of a Linksys WRT54G with pre-v.5 chipsets and FOSS firmware.

The hardware in the v.2 through v.4 chipsets was way overkill for the
basic mission of the factory firmware, which is why they dropped the
memory amounts (both flash and standard RAM) in half after v.4. But
that's also why the pre-v.5 chipsets are now highly desired for hacked
boxes doing non-standard stuff :). Again, check the specs:

The v.2 is considered the crem-de-la-crem of Linksys routers for
serious hacking :).
