Your suggested reference to the Ubuntu forumns did the trick. After the 
addition of the "user_pref........" entry to the prefs.js file, the link 
can do its job and Firefox goes to the indicate url.  So mni tnx for the 
lead.
Now I'm back to the behavior I've had for a couple of years with Ubuntu: 
the linked site opens in Firefox, but I don't automatically transfer 
from TBird to FF.  I remain in TBird until I manually click into 
Firefox.  Yes, I *have* searched the Forums for help and have even posed 
the question. But nada.  Obviously, this is a minor irritation compared 
to the former.
