Gmail is all secure so it using the secure ports does two things. Gets
around the ISPs blocking the ports and keeps it all secure. :)

So That's it,
I got a gmail account about 3 months ago, and at the time I
couldn't
download e-mails to my local machine. I read their configuration
instructions,
and they seemed weird to me. For example, they wanted to use port 995
for POP service when POP3 is port 110. Port 995 is for secure service POP3s.
