[Tfug] JRE on Debian

I want to install a program on a Debian Etch server that streams video.

The video streamer requires the JRE 5 or better.

When I issue the command java --version, I get:

java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-20)

Should I uninstall this version before installing the 1.6 version from
http://www.java.com? What subdirectory should I install the later
version in?

The version 1.4.2 seems to be the latest version available in the usual
Debian repositories.
