Vmware has two free products... VMware Player (runs existing Vms, no
creation) and VMware Server (Create and run). perhaps you grabbed the

In the case of using Linux as the guest os, VMware is definitely worth
the "figuring out" time. The "VMware Tools for Linux" includes
accelerated networking, X11 graphics, and suspend & resume support.
Linux guests seem much more responsive under VMware. Windows guests also
seem pretty snappy. Windows boots faster in the VM than on bare metal
(YMMV).
