Hello all, I'm having issues with a fresh install of Debian. I've been trying to get apt to install anything, messing with my sources.list file, and I must have screwed something up. After finally getting the repositories I want listed in the file, I get an error now when I run apt-get update.

Reading Package Lists... Error!

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header

E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status

E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Of course I googled it, and a fix I found says to add a line to my apt.conf file....

APT::Cache-Limit "42123456";

Well, I don't have an apt.conf file. I have an apt.conf.d dir, with a file called 70debconf, is this what I'm looking for? If not, do I need to create a file?

I wanted to try this before I tried the other solution I found, which is to rename my 'status-old' file to 'status', overwriting a supposedly corrupted file.

Steve
