If you just want to read .doc files people are sending to you I would
strongly encourage to use antiword program.

It is extremely light and from the command line antiword -t filename.doc will
display document in the form similar to more filename.pcf
How big is open office anyway 10 Gb. For spread sheets I would use abacus.
Again extremely light thing. It took me less than a minute to compile
both programs on FreeBSD.
