That's unfortunate; ALSA is a much more robust framework than OSS, IMHO.
But then again, ALSA is very Linux-specific, I'm afraid :/

One way to prevent applications from locking up your sound card would be to
have a sound server like ESD or aRTs or JACK.  That way, the server is the
only program to talk to the sound hardware, and all other applications go
through the server.  This allows for audio mixing, multi-channel output, and
in the case of ESD, sound networking as well.   I'm not sure how well each
of these works with OSS, but it's definitely something to look into.
