[Tfug] Any tips for diagnosing possible hardware problems?

Thanks to all who helped. Here is an update:

I ran memtest86+ (from the Ubuntu cd) for 4 hours, and there were no
errors.

Then I pulled a cd drive from another pc and swapped it out. I used the
Ubuntu cd and it booted fine, though it was a little slower than usual.
I then installed Debian etch, and it too worked fine.

Based on another reply, I guess that does not mean the cd drive was
bad. I had no idea that a cd could work on one drive and not another.
How disturbing!

Now I still have a few things that are weird on this computer.

1) The floppy drive light stays on all the time. I will try replacing
the cable, and the drive to see if that solves the problem.

2) The first time I started Firefox, the computer immediately turned
itself off. I started it back up, and this time everything worked fine,
but I have a feeling that something is not quite right.

Thanks!
Glen
