for any of you who also had similar needs to mine, here is an update.
you'll recall that i was using kde but considered it bloated for my
purposes.

i chose sawfish. it is fast and small, has a nice configurator, and
is highly customizable. took only a few minutes to get it to work
right. if you ever need to do something with it that isn't an option,
you can do it without compiling or even reloading.

i considered every wm and desktop manager in debian, so that covers
everything everybody suggested except for an old one that bowie used
to use. i liked the innovation of wmii, the audacity of xwem, the
ideological zeal and wiki of ratpoison, the valiant effort of icewm
and xfce to compete against the big boys, the epic long march of
enlightenment, and the support base and wiki of fluxbox. the runners
up are wmii and fluxbox, though i never did find out whether it is
possible to bind right click to lower in the latter. if anybody ever
uses xwem and documents it in native english, i will be tempted.

final config:

sawfish
startx (no display manager)
xautolock
xset s
xlock
kicker (kde panel)

not much customization was required in any of these.

Webmaster: do you believe that people will (a) switch browsers to view
your "best viewed with" page or (b) go to your competitor?
