Unless I'm missing something, it sounds like everything's working.
Congrats! X's log is located at /var/log/XFree86.N.log (or
/var/log/Xorg.N.log). There's a lot in there (which is good when you
need it but overwhelming and intimidating when you're not used to it).
Most of it's informational; warnings (indicated as WW) aren't
necessarily problems; be on the lookout for errors (EE).

The issue with the cursor traversing past the monitor bounds could
indicate that you need to reconfigure your screen resolution or, less
likely, that you've got a virtual desktop configured but I'd suggest
checking your monitor settings first.

For future reference, you can reconfigure Debian packages via
dpkg-reconfigure. But note that if you want to regenerate an edited
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, you'll need to generate a new md5sum (it's a
safety check, added by Debian I believe, so that you don't
accidentally overwrite your xorg.conf when upgrade/reconfiguring X).
Details are listed in the xorg.conf file. I can't recall whether this
also applies to XFree86.
