[Tfug] equivalent of top(1) for firefox?

firefox is really annoying, this time because it frequently uses up
100% of cpu, and i have no way of knowing which page or extension is
doing it, whether it's js or something else, etc. i have lots of
tabs.

is there a simple way to do the equivalent of top(1) so i don't have
to guess or reinstall? ff kinda feels like ms windows, in that it
does stuff behind your back and you have no easy way to find out what.

i am using debian etch mozilla-firefox 1.0.7. might upgrade to
unstable firefox 1.5.

(apropos of nothing, why does ff need both a .mozilla and a .firefox?)

thanks.

Webmaster: do you believe that people will (a) switch browsers to view
your "best viewed with" page or (b) go to your competitor?
