I think Knoppix will need a bit more power to run, and your machines are
486.  Damn Small Linux - http://www.damnsmalllinux.org - is another
Debian-based LiveCD distro that runs well on older software.  It's got a
very small footprint (50mb) and it runs rather fast on older hardware.  I
think it may be a good fit for what you're using it for.
