[Tfug] caching nameserver for performance only

just curious:

why don't most desktop users connected to an isp install a caching
nameserver for performance? firefox seems not to cache ip addresses,
at least not much. especially for those who have slow or unreliable
nameservers or who use proxies that forward dns requests through
socks4a,
wouldn't it speed up nearly every web page? (of course, in the latter
case, you'd have to use one that can forward the requests
appropriately.)

yet very few people seem to do that. what am i missing? does
everybody have just incredibly good latency to their nameservers?

Webmaster: do you believe that people will switch browsers to view
your page instead of going to your competitor?
