johngalt,

If you have a residential acct with starband useing the 360 modem Linux does
not work at all with starband service.
Starband has recently come out with a new modem: 480 pro but you have to
have a comercial acct for that modem:
http://www.starband.com/special/480pro.asp
I only have the residential w/ 360 modem. I had hoped to upgrade to
commercial w/ the new 480 pro modem but Starband does not have the upgrade
available for existing customers yet. Starband has been off & on about
saying that the upgrade will be available this fall & then it was mi october
& now they are telling me that it will be available tward the end/begining
of the year.
Linux can be used w/the 360 modem in 2 ways networking w/winproxy software
or dual-booting w/VMware software. The first option requires you to use a
windows machine to run the specialized software that is used to wrap &
compress your TCP/IP requests & send it over the starband network to thier
hub where the request is uncompressed & unwraped:
http://www.starbandusers.com/performance.htm
Along with starbands software you have to use an additional piece of
software called winproxy for starband:
http://www.ositis.com/english/home/hm_home_starband_en.asp\
The windows PC wil need an extra NIC & you will need a hub or a switch to
network the other PCs to the gateway PC.
The second option requires you to dual-boot windows & Linux & run the
starband software via VMware:
http://mcaldwel.mystarband.net/starband/linux.htm
It does seem that the starband installer will run & install useing wine if
one can figure out how to get wine to register as win98 instead of win95.
Since win95 can not run the starband software the installer will say that
the linux system does not meet minimum requirements.
With the new 480 pro modem ther is no need to run specialized windows
centric sofware on one PC. The 480 does all of the wrapping & comprssing of
TCP/IP requests on the modem itself & had a 4 port "router" built in. This
makes the 480 pro compatible with any OS not just windows. The only problem
is waiting for them to make the upgrade for existing customers of starband.
Starband says that they will have a similar modem for residential sevice but
it will not be available for at least another year.
