ATI 8500, correct?
You'll have to get these:
http://ati.com/support/drivers/linux/radeon-linux.html?type=linux&prodType=graphic&prod=productsLINUXdriver&submit.x=2&submit.y=9&submit=GO%21
(ick, long link, sorry)
They will give you S3C support so you can play things like UT2k3. However,
if you don't need S3C support (you're playing UT, Q1/Q2/Q3A/QF, Tux Racer,
etc. etc) then the standard XFree86 drivers will still work.
The binary drivers from ATI are a royal pain to install... just a bit of
fair warning. The psuedo-binary drivers from nVidia are /much/ easier to
get going.
I personally play several games under Linux (my box is Linux only) with my
gaming clan (http://geekcomix.com/clanam/) and I have a radeon 9500 +
Debian. So it is possible to make these work. It's just /really/ hard work
to do it. Follow their instructions:
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/readme0328.txt
It helps if you've already compiled your own kernel. Also, if you're
really serious about gaming under Linux, then I'd recommend this patch:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/
so you can have lower latency and better response. Also, ditch KDE/Gnome
as they are resource hogs and don't use esound, arts, or anything else
which proxies audio.
