Jon,

I like pipermail. Seems to work pretty well for me. I don't really know 
of any other archiving tools other than the mailarchive service.

Do you think it is possible to just add an indexing/searching feature 
like sitesearch or ht://dig? Would that be too intensive a thing for the 
server of the mailing list?
