Its just the version. A version gets a name sometime in unstable. The name stays with it as it migrates from unstable to testing and testing to stable. Stable is the official release which is currently "woody".

Right now:
unstable = sid
testing = sarge
stable = woody = 3.0

Old stabel version 2.2 was named "potato"

Newbie question:

What is the difference between the various "flavors" of Debian (Sarge,
woody, potato)?
