[Tfug] USB drive/MP3 combo on linux

Anything that works as a USB mass storage device *should* work under linux
as such. You're pretty safe if it claims it doesn't need drivers for win2K or winXP. Now granted, I have no experience with the mp3 players, but I did get
a usb smart media reader working. I've read that scsi emulation helps. I think most of the mp3 players fail to list linux support because you actually have to set it up and possible install some kernel modules.

I was looking at these over the past week. Some even have an fm tuner and a mic for voice recording all in a package slightly bigger than a zippo. Its getting hard to resist. :-)

My question: Some say specifically on the package that they can be used to transfer files, while others do not. I suspect that as long as they are USB storage device all is well, but does anyone know if any of these will not work if I put non-mp3 files on them?

Cheers,
JDR

Subject:	[Tfug] USB drive/MP3 combo on linux

Was shopping around for a MP3 as a gift. I saw MP3 players that can
also be used as a USB drive. Well, the combo of the two makes me
interested in such a device.

I have seen some sourceforge projects related to some of the MP3
devices. But looking to see if there is any local experience.

Anyone with experience with these on Linux? Any vendors directly
supporting Linux? Recommendations on kernal version?

TIA

TR
