Yes, YellowDog is based on the RedHat rpm system as is Suse and Mandrake (both have PPC distros/support as well as Sparc ports).  YellowDog 2.3 is now using apt as it's update method as well.  Personally I have never formed a taste for Debian strictly because of it's install headaches.
